About the role

Working in our design team, you’ll bring your experience of product development to produce innovative designs that meet the specification, delight our clients, are reliable and cost effective to manufacture. If you’re a talented designer with an inquiring mind that is excited by the challenge of working in a fast-paced consultancy environment, then you’ll fit right in. Working collaboratively and building strong relationships with colleagues and clients is key to our success, but it’s also important that you can work independently and autonomously as well. The consultancy environment will give you experience in a wide and diverse variety of work, allowing you to develop your technical skills and widen your commercial experience. You’ll get challenging problems to solve and be part of a skilled and friendly team who will support you along the way.

  • Communicating with clients clearly and confidently while showing sound commercial judgement
  • Delivering projects within scope, to time and on budget
  • Collaborating effectively with colleagues and actively mentoring junior members of staff
  • Ability to work autonomously and independently when required

Role Requirements

  • Degree qualified in mechanical engineering or related discipline
  • High level theoretical understanding of the principles of mechanical engineering
  • Good understanding of materials and manufacturing processes
  • Clear and confident communicator with a preference for pictures over words
  • Strong 3D CAD skills (preferably SolidWorks)
  • Be able to demonstrate analytical and/or simulation skills
  • Experienced and capable at building relationships with clients and suppliers
  • Several years of demonstrable experience in product development, preferably within a consultancy environment
  • Experience of bringing at least one product to market successfully
  • Familiarity with ISO 9001 working processes

Working at OPD

At Oxford Product Design (OPD) we’re on a mission to make things better. Better for the products we design, the clients we work with, our people working here, our planet, and everyone we connect with along the way.

Our exceptional team of professional problem solvers work with both start-ups on ground-breaking new ideas, as well as some of the world’s leading brands on category-defining products that improve how we humans live and work.

As innovators we are curious, experimental, creative and passionate. But our pragmatic, precise approach and highly technical expertise mean that manufacturability and risk management are at the core of everything we do.

We are based in a beautiful historic barn in Harwell, Oxfordshire. There is plenty of on-site parking and the studio is well connected by bus and rail links.
