At OPD we’ve coined a new term, New Product Science (NPS). You’ve probably heard of NPD (New Product Development) and NPI (New Product Innovation), but we think that NPS speaks more to our own processes and methodology.

At OPD most of the products we develop incorporate science, be that in the form of an advanced sensor, a unique lab process, or a piece of lab equipment. Our approach is holistic and evidence-based, using meticulous observation, experimentation and theory testing.

The Oxford English Dictionary definition of science:

“The systematic study of the structure and behaviour of the physical and natural world through observation, experimentation, and the testing of theories against the evidence obtained.”

This beautifully articulates the process we follow when we bring new products to market. In a world where every aspect of new product development is optimised, experience, prototyping and computer simulation are invaluable tools, but they only take us so far. This is where NPS steps in. By systematically studying the behaviour of physical prototypes through observation, experimentation and rigorous testing of theories, we not only validate our designs but uncover insights that may have been overlooked using a less structured approach.

Adopting a scientific approach to product development also delivers a strategic edge. Enabling us to de-risk the development process early on and ensure that every step is backed by solid evidence not only enhances the reliability and effectiveness of our products but also opens the door to unexpected, innovative solutions.
