Reviving history: Cherry Barns re-thatched to perfection
OPD’s studio, workshop, and labs in Cherry Barns, Harwell, have undergone a stunning transformation with the completion of their rethatching. Beginning in the summer and wrapping up just before Christmas, this project has been a labour of love, and the results speak for themselves.
As a Grade II listed building with areas dating back as far as 1350, Cherry Barns holds historical significance in Harwell, getting a mention in John Masefield’s poem, “The Cherries”.
When the barns were taken on by OPD, the thatch was in need of repair and after a year’s wait for the thatch to be grown to order, the work began. A skilled team of thatchers worked diligently to restore the roof, paying careful attention to preserve its original character. They have ensured the new thatch mirrors the previous design, including intricate ridge detailing, which helps the building remain in keeping with its original charm.
The craftsmanship and care displayed throughout the process have been amazing. The team have enjoyed observing the progress over the last few months and we are impressed with the effort and expertise that has gone into this restoration.
The team at OPD will be looking forward to our quieter return in the new year when we can expect fewer noises from the above us in the studio.
Take a look below at the behind the scenes of this transformation.
