Shark Ninja

Developing tools to evaluate light emittance and designing novel eye cooling technology for the LED-powered skincare face mask.

the challenge

CryoGlow™ blends light therapy and cooling into a wearable mask. OPD was brought in to help verify optical performance and improve both ergonomic and developing a core benefit of using the product experience - cooling around the eye area.

We were tasked with designing optical test equipment capable of evaluating every LED in the array of nearly 500 LEDs for brightness and spectrum accuracy, while also exploring ways to improve sealing, airflow, and user comfort for a wide range of face shapes. In addition we were tasked with designing a simple way of cooling under eye area to reduce the signs of puffy eyes.

approach
test, tune, refine

We began with competitor analysis and sealing evaluations, then developed bespoke optical test rigs using calibrated spectrometers and automated software. This ensured precise measurement of LED output for benchmarking and validation.

In parallel, we prototyped and tested flexible eye-cooling interfaces - using bellows-style forms to improve comfort and reduce pressure points. Insights were used to inform pre-production refinement and tool-ready CAD.

We also supported evaluation against photobiological safety standards - helping Shark validate compliance using rigorous, repeatable processes.

the results
from insight to implementation

Our work enabled Shark to validate CryoGlow’s optical performance with rigour - supporting third-party compliance and internal QA. The flexible eye cooling concept improved fit and comfort, making the product more inclusive and user-friendly.

Full-cycle involvement

OPD was involved from early concepting and teardown through to tooling handover - designing rigs, developing prototypes, supporting safety reviews, and enabling a smooth transition to production-ready solutions.

CryoGlow brought together optics, comfort, and precision engineering. We loved the challenge of designing custom test rigs and solving real human factors issues - this is where detail and performance truly meet.”
